I was reading on a tech site yesterday and came upon some interesting info for someone who is an avid Apple fangirl. If you are planning to upgrade to OSX Lion (or 10.7 )you need to do a few things to prepare your Mac for the upgrade.
You should make sure your software is updated to 10.6.8 before installing Lion.Just click on the Apple(About this Mac) to see which version of Snow Leopard you are running and make sure it is that version if not perform a software update by clicking on it.Also I would suggest using time machine to back up snow leopard before installing the new operating system. You should be backing up your data weekly with this utility. I just had a hard drive fail on an Imac so I know how important this is.Luckily the data was able to be transferred onto a new hard drive.
After backing up all your files you should realize some thing else about Lion. This operating system uses touch gestures much like the ipad and iphone instead of just a mouse click to access your apps and folders. The screen layout looks similar but once you click on launchpad all your apps will be on your home screen .You can organize your apps into folders like on the ipad and iphone which is a very cool feature but now you won't be dragging them to the dock to launch they will already be available to you with this feature .
Now onto something I just found out after reading on Mashable's tech section the other day.
If you have an older Mac and are running Power PC programs using the Rosetta architecture which was developed for the first Intel Macs I would suggest sticking with what you have either Leopard or Snow Leopard and not upgrading. If you upgrade these programs will not run under OSX Lion!!!Examples include Microsoft Office for Mac all versions except the new 2011 one. Also a lot of the older adobe programs such as illustrator will not work. For a complete list go to www.tekserve.com and type in Lion under search.
You can go to About this mac then more info then scroll down to programs click on that and up will come a table that will tell you if your applications are Intel, Universal, or Power PC.If your mac is relatively new unless you are running some older programs you have nothing to worry about here.
As you can see Apple is pushing this new operating system without presenting all of the facts to us.I noticed today in the Mac App Store that they are already starting to upgrade those programs for Lion make sure if you have downloaded anything from there that you have the update installed on your system.
Well we shall see if OSX lion comes out this week all indications are that it should according to Appleinsider.Have fun with Lion just check your programs for compatibility before installing !
In my next blog I will write about my impressions of the new operating system and the new Macbook Airs so stay tuned. Thanks for reading my blog!
